Loved this sophomore novel by Jenn Bishop. Such a great depiction of having a crush, and the turmoil of growing up is so perfectly mirrored in the tornado.
This book is an excellent choice for young and middle school readers. The novel deals with the themes of survival and loss. How does someone move on in life after your home is gone? What is truly important in a person's life? Families from varied backgrounds experience a tornado strike in an unlikely location, and this story explores the aftermath both realistically and poignantly.
A touching coming of age novel about an unthinkable event--a tornado that hits town and destroys your house. The storyline avoids any real pain or tragedy, and there's a happy ending for people and animals. The novel shows people at their best generous, cheerful, determined, while allowing the main character to have doubts, desires and fears.
Oh the memories of junior high this brings back--and living in tornado alley, this really hits home with some of the near misses I have had with tornadoes--the apartment building I lived in one year in college that was destroyed by a tornado the day after I moved out, a year ago Christmas with intense tornado devastation about 6 miles from where I live.
14 Hollow Road is another terrific middle grades text by Jenn Bishop. Imagine a tornado tragically taking your house and your crush's house....and finding out this happened at the middle school dance! Imagine going home to not having a home and also finding out your dog is missing (and worse, you feel at fault! The reader immediately connects with Maddie and the imagery in the book makes it to easy to become Maddie's character. Not only does Maddie deal with this tragedy, there is friendship tension, crush tension, and sometimes family tension. Beautiful story Jenn! Highly recommend!
With a subtle hand Jennifer Bishop captures the feelings of a first crush while setting it in a wider context of how community comes together during times of trouble, in this instance a tornado that leaves homes destroyed and people bereft of precious possessions. But the worldview Bishop Creates is ultimately a loving one in which family, friendships become stronger in the wake of tragedy. In a time when children are exposed to life issues way beyond their ability to grasp and absorb them, this novel comes to set priorities and provide comfort in knowing that you can grow through difficult times and cherish what counts; crushes, friends, family and community. This is an authentic, moving middle grade novel.
This book captures the awkward, giddy, confusion of middle school crushes and friendships so beautifully! The tone and character dynamics remind me a bit of one of my favorite books from when I was a kid, Judy Blume's Just as Long as We're Together. I would have cherished this book as a kid (and was completely charmed as an adult, too)! I think 4th-6th graders are going to love this!
